Florida Employee Rights & Labor Law: What Workers & Employers Need to Know

Florida is an at-will employment state, meaning an employer can generally end the employment relationship without cause. That rule has significant limits. Federal and state laws prohibit termination, demotion, or other adverse actions taken for discriminatory or retaliatory reasons, and those protections apply regardless of at-will status.

The Florida Civil Rights Act prohibits workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, handicap, and marital status for employers with 15 or more employees.
